Šivec House Gallery

Visit Prominent House in Radovljica’s Old Town where Art and Architecture intersect

The Šivec House Gallery is a unique exhibition area and the place for all art lovers, since it unites the arts of architecture, painting and illustration all in one place.

The Šivec House Gallery is home to a valuable collection of illustrations for children, which have been created by Slovenian illustrators. The remarkable illustrations allow visitors to relive the fairytales of their childhood, forever marking Slovenian children’s and youth literature. The gallery began collecting and exhibiting the illustrations in the 1970s and is the only such establishment in Slovenia that deals in this type of fine art systematically and professionally.

The Šivec House Gallery is also known for its numerous and notable exhibitions of works by other contemporary (Slovenian and foreign) artists, which play an important contribution to Radovljica’s artistic scene.

Šivec House, a bourgeois house dating from the second half of the 16th century, is classified among the important monuments of late Gothic architecture in Slovenia. Its richly-painted exterior and interior architecture make the house alone worth a visit.

Čebelarski muzej v Radovljici je edini specializirani pooblaščeni državni muzej v Sloveniji. Njegov obisk je izjemna priložnost, da se celovito seznanite z bogato zgodovino čebelarjenja na Slovenskem.

Original Illustrations for Children’s and Youth Literature

Work on gathering the extensive collection of original illustrations began in the 1970s and today numbers 185 works by 53 Slovenian illustrators. The illustrations and books on exhibit include: Najdihojca, Zvezdica Zaspanka, Enci benci na kamenci, Pestrna, Kdo je Vidku napravil srajčico, Modrost kralja Salomona, Palčica and numerous others. The oldest illustrations in the collection are those by Maksim Sedej from 1947, which were created for the book Detinstvo by Maksim Gorki.

Works of Art acquired through Collaboration in the ‘Slovenia Open to Art’ Project

By collaborating in the ‘Slovenia Open to Art’ project, which the Šivec House Gallery became a part of in 1998, the gallery acquires artworks by renowned Slovenian and foreign artists who are chosen and invited to attend the art workshop at Sinji vrh above Ajdovščina. The collection is being kept in the Gallery Depot and is not on display as a whole; particular artworks are occasionally included into different kinds of exhibitions.

Works by Artists from Radovljica and the Surroundings

The Šivec House Gallery also devotes attention to the creativity of artists who live and work in Radovljica and its surroundings. The small collection comprises various works of art by academic and amateur artists, the majority of which have been donated to the gallery. The collection is occasionally and partly exhibited under the title Iz galerijskega depoja (From the Gallery Depot).

Notable Objects of Šivec House Gallery

The most representative collection of the Šivec House Gallery is the collection of original illustrations for children’s and youth literature, which have been created by Slovenian illustrations. Among them the so-called ‘fairytale’ illustrations are particularly noteworthy. These are artists – an older generation of academic artists – who have mainly devoted themselves to painting and drawing for children and young people and who the profession has acknowledged for the important role they have played in creating modern (contemporary) Slovenian illustrations.
