Immerse into History of Radovljica
Feel the time of the 18th century and learn about the history of Radovljica, which at that time belonged to the vast Habsburg state. A great deal of change in thinking and the socio-political field took place around the world at that exciting time, especially in Europe.
One of the central figures of this period in Carniola at that time was Anton Tomaž Linhart (1756-1759), the Radovljica-born enlightener and intellectual, the most important Slovenian revivalist, the first Slovenian playwright, the father of Slovenian theatre and scientific historiography.
The comprehensive, central exhibition at the Municipal Museum is dedicated to exploring his life and work and inspires visitors to reflect on a time that has left its mark on the present.
The gallery passage of the Radovljica Manor also belongs to the museum. The passage once connected the manor with St. Peter’s church. Representatives of the family of Counts of Thurn-Valsassina had direct access to the church via the passage, while today in the summertime the passage serves as a place for interesting occasional exhibitions by the Municipal Museum.
Read about the history of the museumAnton Tomaž Linhart (1756–1795) – “Now I’m thinking about how to become famous.”
The exhibition dedicated to Anton Tomaž Linhart (1756–1795) offers an interesting insight into the exciting period of the Enlightenment and the rebellious spirit of this famous Radovljica resident, who was born in the town during the period when it was part of the Habsburg monarchy.
The exhibition tells the story of Linhart’s life when he found himself moving from Radovljica to Ljubljana, to Vienna and then again back to Ljubljana. As a senior civil servant, he was credited with introducing higher education studies and the first public library in Ljubljana, and Linhart was also the initiator and founder of many primary schools. He wrote his most famous works in the Slovenian language – the comedy Županova Micka (Micka – the Mayor’s Daughter) and Ta veseli dan ali Matiček se ženi (This Merry Day or Matiček’s Wedding). In 1789, with the production of the comedy Županova Micka in 1789, Linhart ‘gave birth’ to Slovenian theatre. He also became famous for his book on the history of Slovenes – Poskus zgodovine Kranjske in drugih dežel južnih Slovanov Avstrije (An Attempt at the History of Carniola and Other Lands of the Southern Slavs of Austria) (1788, 1791). The extensive work is considered the beginning of Slovenian scientific historiography.

Notable Object of Municipal Museum
Description
It was published in two parts – the first in 1788 and the second in 1791 – and is considered to be the greatest conceptual achievement of the Slovenian Renaissance and, by design, reaches the scientific level of the time in which it was created.
The anticipated third book was left unfinished due to Linhart’s sudden death.
